I remember the first few years as a photographer, scouting locations and sticking to the spots I had previously found. I would walk past a spot with perfect light, and ignore it, because I just HAD to get to all the spots I had planned before. I don’t quite remember when it was that I decided to start stopping at those places that were clearly speaking to me as an artist, but I did, and since then, I have discovered the in between spots, as just as important as the in between moments I look for when taking photos.
There’s the perfect picture of the entire family looking at the camera, and then there’s a photo that happen just before, or just after, and THAT is the one that melts my heart. It’s mom looking lovingly at her husband, it’s the kids laughing during a tickle fight, it’s the leaning closer for a kiss or a moment I didn’t really ask for, but was paying enough attention to not let it pass by without being captured.
The experience I want my clients to go through is so much deeper than just receiving beautiful photos. I want them to have fun, learn more about each other, laugh, connect, pay attention to their surroundings…
This family is so dear to me. Mom Tracie has been a friend for years, and she’s also a photographer. There’s a true honor to be chosen by another photographer for photos, because of the obvious :-). Tracie says I inspire her, but I hope she knows she inspires me too! To keep growing professionally and personally, to cultivate our friendship, to push her and myself.
I’m not sure we knew when we met that we would be friends, but all those in between moments made sure of it. Thanks for trusting me, girl!
