I sometimes get asked if I photograph extended families. I’ve heard many photographers saying they think this kind of session is a nightmare, BUT, I really love it. I get to see so much love, and I know the photos delivered will be treasured by many! So yes, I absolutely photograph extended families!
The best way to go about a successful extended family session is to think of groups. Here are some typical group shots I take every time I photograph extended families: everybody, each family individually, all the kids separately, together, and siblings together, the grandparents with their children, the grandparents with their grandchildren, etc… Each group is VERY important! If possible I like to take each family separately for 10-15 min and do like a “mini” session with them, then at the very end (or the beginning) I photograph the big group, siblings, etc photos. It keeps things more organized.
I also send all my clients my awesome “What to Wear Guide” for inspiration! I’m not a fan of everybody wearing the same color, or everybody in white shirts and jeans. I recommend choosing 2-4 colors that coordinate well and mixing colors, prints and patterns for a more modern look. The results are beautiful!
